The Canadian Initiative for Nordic Studies (CINS) was established in 1987 to promote multidisciplinary academic and cultural interest in the Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, including the Faeroe Islands and Greenland. The mandate of the Initiative is national and it cooperates with the national organization, the Association for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies in Canada (AASSC).
An endowment (1/3 from Swedish sources, 2/3 from the Alberta Government) is mainly used to finance:
The academic scope is wide including any field in which links between the Nordic countries and Canada can be established.
The Board is responsible for the activities of CINS and consists of members from the academic staff, the non-academic staff, the off-campus Nordic community, and the student body. The President of Association for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies in Canada is an ex-officio member.
